About Us
The Jefferson Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) was chartered on July 25, 1940 by Secretary of State R.A. Gray. Original board members were: Larkin Hundley, L.E. Braswell, Sidney Coxetter, L.G. Morris and Richard H. Simpson. The District was created to develop, plan and direct a conservation assistance program for local agricultural producers. While the program has evolved over the years, the District still provides cooperative technical assistance to help landowners reach their land management goals, while maintaining a healthy environment. With assistance from Natural Resources Conservation Services (NRCS), the SWCD encourages landowners to implement conservation practices which protect the soil, water, air, plants and animals while supporting sustainable agriculture.
Supervisors |
The governing body of a soil and water conservation district consists of five elected supervisors. The office of a soil and water conservation district supervisor is nonpartisan and district wide. Candidates are elected in a general election to a 4-year term. Vacancies are filled by appointment by the remaining supervisors until the next regular election. Supervisors receive no monetary compensation for their services.

Outreach
|
The Conservation District Board realizes the importance of educating our public about natural resource conservation. To help with this goal, the SWCD supervisors sponsor several events through out the year. In May of each year, supervisors and district staff assist other natural resource professionals in the Annual 4-H Ecology Field Day sponsored by the Jefferson County Extension Services. This field day, which is set up for elementary students, helps participants come away with a better understanding of how important natural resources are to Jefferson County.
